It's Time for Companies to Take Responsibility for Animal Welfare

“It's surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.”

Introduction

Who speaks up for the creatures who cannot speak for themselves? Animal welfare and advocacy nonprofit organizations play a crucial role in the world today, from preventing animal suffering and exploitation to protecting natural habitats.

This July, we are highlighting nonprofits that advocate for animal welfare and encourage the public to think critically about how our own species’ way of life impacts others.

Animals need our help in several different ways. Some organizations fight to overhaul factory farming, others tackle wildlife trafficking or destructive fishing practices. Many animal charities fight for legislative change at the national level, while others act more locally.

Perhaps the most recognizable animal welfare organization in your community is your local animal shelter. In addition to the standout nonprofits in this toolkit, we encourage you to identify and support a nearby shelter. These organizations often rely heavily on volunteers, as well as the financial support of their communities, to keep their facilities up and running.

What is Deed’s “Cause of the Month” initiative?

Deed launched our “Cause of the Month” initiative in response to the important moments we see happening in the world around us. With our toolkits, we aim to inspire our client-partners and rally employees to become volunteers, donors, and leaders by supporting causes they really care about.

With “Cause of the Month,” we aim to bring greater context to periods of observance—from Pride Month to Women's History Month—such that anyone who reads our toolkit will have a clear plan of action for how to maintain their support today, tomorrow, for the rest of the month, and throughout the year.

What will I get in every “Cause of the Month” toolkit?

While every “Cause of the Month” toolkit has unique insights and engagement opportunities relevant to each particular cause, you can always expect us to cover certain areas.

For a better idea of what you’ll be getting, here’s what’s included in our Animal Welfare toolkit:

  • Volunteering and giving opportunities in the U.S. and around the world.
  • In-depth look at specific cause areas, including: shelters, marine life, responsible agriculture, and more.
  • A calendar of awareness days in July.
  • Employee and employee resource group (ERG) engagement ideas, as well as a walkthrough of how to craft a social impact campaign around animal welfare.
  • Recommendations of worthwhile books, podcasts, and films on issues of importance to animal welfare.

Getting started engaging employees in animal welfare

For better or worse, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts mean something different to virtually every company. But as we work to define what ESG means for our organizations, there is room to prioritize humans and animals alike. From caring for the animals in our own neighborhoods to conserving natural habitats, it's up to us to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

The business community can play a significant role in ensuring that animals live with dignity. There's a reason why so many social impact leaders from Airbnb to lululemon are turning to all-in-one impact tech for support with their multifaceted approach to ESG.

Deed is a workplace giving and volunteering platform that puts people first, because user experience shouldn’t stand between you and doing good.
